Road Trip June 23, 2017

It has been a couple of days since my last post.  It has been a short, but enough stay here in Page, AZ.  Todd and I fit in lots of activities in the couple of days.

Our first day here was a trip down the Colorado River.  We used Colorado River Discovery.  The trip takes you to the head of the Colorado River.  We had to drive through a two mile tunnel, which took us 500 feet below.  We also needed Homeland Security clearances, as the raft trip starts at the base of the Glen Canyon Dam.  It was a cool perspective of the canyon and Horseshoe Bend, but a little to long for Todd and I.  If we knew what the raft ride was like, we would have passed.  It was also a bit pricey and for the first time since we left New Fairfield, we felt like tourist.

This trip ate away most of the day, so we just had a light dinner at a local honky tonk, The Dam Bar and Grill.   It was a decent burger joint with a nice staff.  The food situation is not that great here, if it were an extended stay, we would have cooked in our apartment.  Also, if traveling in the area, avoid the hotel chains and stay at one of the local motels.  They actually are cleaner and better than the pricy chains. This is the apartment we got at The Red Rocks Motel, for just $120 night.

Our second day here was phenomenal.  We went to the Navajo Reservation and took a tour of upper Antelope Canyon.  Breathtaking!  Mind blowing! Incredible! Tear driven!  Todd and I were blown away.  This is NOT a self guided tour, and you are accompanied by Native Americans of the Navajo Tribe.  There are no words to express how beautiful this canyon is.  Once again, another reason to believe that God exist.  Please click on the link to learn about Antelope Canyon, and check out my video.  This tour cost $48/person and was well worth it.

After this mind blowing experience, Todd and I decided to hike up to Horseshoe Bend. The day prior we got to view it from below, on the Colorado River.  We decided we wanted to see it from above.  We tracked about .75 of a mile up to the cliffs and .75 back.  Going in was a little steep at first, but then was down hill.  The way back was tough in the heat, it was pretty steep.  There were too many people at top, Todd and I did not feel comfortable, and once again stupidity reared its ugliness.  This is a hike that beings you up to a cliff that has a 1140 foot drop.  NO GAURD RAILS, just a few warnings about standing on the edge and loose rock.  Once again, we got to witness parents not paying attention.  This time Todd asked that we leave, he was frightened of tragedy and we did not want to experience that on our trip.  Nevertheless, it was a nice heart pumping, sweaty hike.

The end of our day was dinner at the Lake Powell Resort, where we took our panoramic tour of Lake Powell (another tourist activity), but a great way to see this beautiful lake.  It was a beautiful 2 hour ride, however, the scenery was a bit hindered by the 33,000 acre forrest fire above Zion and Bryce ( Dixie Canyon).   The smoke on Lake Powell was not pleasant and did not allow for great photos.

Due to the forrest fires, and our falling in love with Sedona.  We will cut out our plans for Zion and Bryce, and head back to Sedona for a while.
