Left Terra Haute at 5AM. Route: 270W, 70W, 46S, 44W to 40W. Illinois, Missouri (thanks for the photo op), Oklahoma to Texas. Terra Haute, I was hoping for a sunrise to share, but overcast and fog said, “No”. Our second car rental displayed some electrical issues, windows opening and closing on their own, so off to OKC Airport to exchange our rental. Thankfully it was along the route. A 15 minute transaction, into a Nissan Versa, and on the road again.
It was a 964+ mile day for Todd, I am thankful he does not trust my driving skills. Our gas tally for today was $30.00. Our Sirius choice was the Bridge, Comedy and Howard. My road pleasure is hot spotting my Mac and looking up things that we pass along the way. The Gateway Arch , for example. I had no idea there’s an elevator in the arch and an observatory, or why the dirt turns red toward the end of Oklahoma. So many things I [we] take for granted, and never look toward the answers or reasons. Sometimes the reveal is inspiring, enriching and bring the awe factor. Other times a disappointment.
We Made it to Amarillo in time for dinner. If ever in the area, Saltgrass Steak House is brilliant. It was steak again, we had to, we are in Texas. A petite Filet Oscar, steamed broccoli and spinach salad with O&V and lemon. Keeping the calorie count under 1200 is tough on the road. But, I am managing. Todd on the other hand, well.
We identified a hotel to crash for the night in Amarillo, The Holiday Inn Express West Amarillo. We stayed here last year and knew it was nice. While checking in and chatting with the manager, I mentioned the hella car situation and our travels to date. He handed me the keys and said, “I upgraded you to a King Suite”, get a good nights rest. This room is sick and all for $109.00. Totally blessed with our stay here in Amarillo.
My post would not be complete without mentioning my mom and uncles presence on this trip. Seeing Cardinals in my backyard is very special to me. When we left New Fairfield and headed down Haviland Hollow, in the middle of the road was a beautiful red Cardinal. We have seen one everyday since we left, and in different forms. Yesterday we got into the elevator in Indiana, and on the elevators permit was a picture of a Cardinal. Today, we pulled behind a trailer and there was a picture of a Cardinal. I know how strong my bond was and will forever be with my mom. I am blessed her love for me is so strong, that she watches over me and lets me know she is here. Another road trip dedicated to Marie and Augie.
