sandstone bridges, wine, mexican and birds: may 30th

Today was epic.  Todd and I headed out for our last hike in Sedona.   Devils Bridge  is a 4.7 mile roundtrip ( our version).  You are unable to access the trailhead without an off road vehicle.  Otherwise you have to access the trailhead by foot.  If you visit Devils Bridge, there are a few options to hit the trail head.  I recommend you stop by The Hike House and determine which would be best for you.  This hike was on Todds wishlist, so I am glad we did it.  I chickened out when we got to the bridge.  I am afraid of heights and am not a risk taker.  Todd, however, took advantage of this magnificent photo opportunity.

This hike is rated easy/moderate, however, it is misleading.  If you do not read the trail maps, you will believe it is only a 1 mile roundtrip hike.  It is not, unless you have an ATV to access the trailhead.

We ran into a couple who thought it was an easy 1 mile hike.  They brought no water.  We all kept the same pace, so conversation took place.  A real nice Michigan couple, a nurse practitioner and collector of classic cars.  I could not help but call them out for being so careless as not to carry water in the desert.  I then opened my camelback and shared my water for the round trip.  Her husbands name is Todd also, so both Todds headed out to the center of the bridge, while their chicken wives waited.  It worked out beautifully, as they both took pics of one another.  I would definitely rate this hike, considering the heat and rock scramble at the end, as moderate to difficult.

We got a hunch that there may be some eagles soaring by the creek at Page Springs Cellars.  We headed out to investigate, a bottle of white and an eagle eye for the eagles.  We had no luck, but the wine was yummy.

Our hotel, The Sky Ranch Lodge,  is truly spectacular, and a few miles off the beaten path.  We spent the remainder of the afternoon walking around the gardens and taking photos.

Dinner at Elote was most incredible.  Great service and fine Mexican food with an awesome vibe.  We tried to dine here a couple of times last year, but no luck.  They open at 5:00 and the line starts at 4:00.  Todd and I got there at 4:30 and there were quite a few diners ahead of us.  They are famous for their Elote, however, we passed, knowing this was going to be a high calorie meal.  Instead, we started with the most delicious guacamole.  I had the short rib enchiladas and Todd had the most delicious skirt steak.

Then it happened, we both hit the stone wall, and felt every step of our 15 miles of Sedona hiking, that we did over the last three days.  We ventured back to our room, I took some vitamin I, and here I am crawled up in bed with my laptop.

Tomorrow we will be tourist and bounce around the town.  Wake up early for sunrise.  Do a little laundry. Early to bed, as we head out to Utah in the morning.  Peace from Sedona.
